The year 2025 has unfolded as a much-improved year for the sheep and wool industry in South Africa. It is encouraging to see producers’ sentiment becoming increasingly positive. With our product prices showing strong recovery throughout the year, we look forward with confidence to a prosperous 2026.
I am proud to say that, despite various challenges, the Dohne Merino has experienced an excellent year. In terms of leadership, Koenas van der Westhuizen has taken over the reins from Philippie Marais. We are deeply grateful for Philippie’s significant contribution since joining the Council in 2012, as well as for the wise and dedicated leadership he has provided over the years. A special word of thanks also goes to Andries Greyling, who, after nearly 19 years of service, was not available for re-election.
The AGM and National Sale were certainly highlights on our calendar, and I trust that we will continue to build on this success.
Dohne Merino sales across the country performed exceptionally well, and every breeder can rightly be proud of the animals presented under the banner of the Society. It is essential that we maintain the high standard of animals made available to the market. Equally important is that we remain vigilant to ensure that, as far as possible, only purebred Dohne Merinos are offered as breeding stock.
Our Dohne Merino inspectors make a tremendous contribution to the success of the breed, and I wish to thank each one of them for their valuable input throughout 2025.
The Dohne Merino World Conference (18–24 October 2026) promises to be a flagship event on next year’s calendar. A great deal of effort is going into the organisation, and I trust that it will receive strong support from all our members.
