Councillor Marcellene van Rooyen of Calvinia and other sponsors, sponsored this group of school children from Williston combined school on a trip to the coast. These children had never been to the sea before. A weekend was arranged where they visited Vanrhynsdorp, radio Namakwaland, a shopping mall in Vredendal and also a chip factory in Lamberts Bay. Needless to say many chips were consumed. They were also given 2 20kg boxes of chips to prepare at home. Surita who accompanied them writes: “Ek was so emosioneel toe hulle so na die see hardloop en die vreugde by hulle ervaar. Ons kon hulle nie wegkry nie.” Another highlight was a trip organised with the Harley Davidson bikers. Birds Island was also visited where much was learned and enjoyed. But all good things come to an end and the very tired group reluctantly made their way home. Thanks to the sponsors as well as the folk of Lamberts Bay who welcomed and opened their hearts to this group of children.
