REPORT: 2015 COURSES

Dohne Merino courses held during 2015 were extremely well supported by a total of 237 students.  This number was made up of 3 international visitors, 19 prospective inspectors and officials, 12 breeders (including commercial farmers), 180 students and 23 high school pupils. These courses were presented at Dohne Agricultural Development Institute, Stutterheim, Elsenburg Agricultural College, Stellenbosch, GLEN Agricultural College and Univ. OFS, Bloemfontein, Weston Agricultural College, Mooi River and Grootfontein Agricultural College, Middelburg, Eastern Cape. We wish to express our appreciation to these educational institutions, who not only expose their students to essential practical orientated breeding improvement techniques, but also for making their facilities and animals available. The wool broker companies – BKB and CMW – deserve special mention for regularly exposing their young officials to these extremely important educational opportunities.

Congratulations to our international visitors – Roberto Quadrelli, Carolina Viñoles and Daniel Groves who respectively attained marks or 74, 71 and 72 for their excellent achievement and their contribution to our main course at Dohne Agricultural Institute, Stutterheim. The participation of Prof. van der Westhuizen in the course at Central University of Technology, who achieved the overall highest mark of 84 percent, deserves special mention. Prof van der Westhuizen’s participation does not only reflect his commitment to his students, but also his ability to give guidance and a high degree of attention that is given to the Dohne breed.

Our congratulations are extended to JJ le Roux, BKB, Malmesbury who attained 75 percent for the senior course as well as Dainca du Plessis and Johan van Huysteen both of the Univ. of Stellenbosch who were the best performers on the course for breeders (Junior) with marks of 78 percent.

In light of the fact that our system has over the last four years, changed considerably, all our members and their clients who attended courses long ago, should once again attend a course. In this very important manner, Dohne Merino depends on its breeders to portray our sheep as the leader in the woolled sheep industry!

Our gratitude and thanks to the following Dohne breeders who hosted candidates of courses for practical sessions during 2015

Richard Armstrong, EDCN Cathcart, Terra Vino Stud, Stellenbosch University, Louis and Carel Nel, Nello Dohnes, Brandfort

A big thank you to our inspectors (Jan Joubert, Hennie Hattingh, Gary Trethewey, Wouter Vorster en Danie Lombard) for their dedicated assistence with the practical training sessions.
