Lief & Leed

Late message was received that our newly eleceted council member Clark Rattray lost his father Craig.

Craig Milburne James Rattray 12 June 1937 – 17 April 2015, started his official connection with the Dohne Merino breed in 1980. His Milburne stud was estab-lished by means of a small nulcleus of old stud ewes. He also made extensive use of the Open Nucleus sys-tem to upgrade Merino flock ewes to his stud. His first production sale took place at Franklin 1990 and shortly thereafter in 1991 he was well deservedly awarded with the Top Breeder award for the Natal region. The Milburne stud regularly achieved top prices at the Nottingham Road and Franklin sales where Craig presented excellent rams for sale together with another Dohne Merino stalwart—Kerneels Grey-ling. He made use of rams purchased from Jo Man-dy’s Pleasant Gift Stud as well as Jurrie Wessels’ Weska stud, the Normandy and Boalax studs. In 1998 the stud was sold after Clark selected a nucleus of ewes in 1994 already to continue the family interest in Dohne Merino breeding by means of the Mount Pleas-ant stud.

Craig Rattray was a real aristocrat that earned respect in a gentle manner. The entire farming community and all Dohne Merino Stud breeders in particular will mourn the passing of one of our stallwarts

Jan Joubert, one of our senior inspectors lost his daughter in a motor car accident near Stellenbosch during Dec 2014.

Our profound condolences are extended to these fami-lies.
