On Wednesday, 25 January 2023, Suidplaas Dohnes held their firt production of 2023. Despite the current challenges to the small stock industry in particular the Southern Cape area, Dohne farmers remained optimistic and the ram JG212480 was sold at the top price of R75 000. This ram, born as a triplet had breeding values of: weaning direct +3.615 kg; weaning maternal -0.238 kg; number of lambs weaned +0.642 percent; clean fleece weight +0.199 kg; fibre diameter -1.366 micron; general merit +15.41. Congratulations to the Schoonwinkel family on buying an excellent ram. The average price for the 92 rams sold were R16 707. A total of 300 ewes were sold at an average price of R2500 each.
The auction was marked by the proceeds of a particular ram sold, being donated to an old age home in Bredasdorp. The du Toits gesture to support the local community also included support to the SPCA and the auction on the farm Klipbankskloof actually evolved to be a total community event!
